2020 Central Texas Showdown Livestock Judging Contest (10/10/20)

 The Central Texas Showdown Livestock Judging Contest will be hosted on Saturday, October 10, 2020 at The Wood Ranch (address in flyer).  We will be implementing a FFA division this year that will have questions and a test!

For junior/senior 4-H and FFA participants, entry fee will be $50/team or $12.50/individual. There will be no late fees but to help us out on planning, please register on Judging Card by October 7th through your CEA/AST

Late entries after the 7th, can be done at the contest. Also, you must provide your own scantrons: Universal Form - A (705A-12).

The Bastrop County Extension Office has some scantrons that can be purchased for $2 each.




2020 Texas 4-H Ag Product ID Workshop (10/06/20)

Join Texas 4-H during National 4-H Week on Tuesday, October 6th at 6:30 pm via Microsoft Teams to learn more about Ag Product Identification. The Agricultural Product Identification contest provides youth the ability to further their knowledge and skills when evaluating ag products grown in Texas. Pre-registration is required via https://tinyurl.com/yxe9mlnn .

Then be sure and get registered on 4HOnline between October 1 – 28, 2020 for the Virtual Ag Product Identification Contest. This contest will be held on Tuesday, November 10th. Two contest times are available, 4:00 or 6:00 pm. Divisions will include Junior (3rd-8th), Senior (9th-12th) and an Adult Challenge!!!  Team information is not required at time of registration but will be needed by November 6th . Adults will only judge as individuals.

The contest will be conducted using an e-scantron. 2020-2021 4-H Enrollment Reminders

It's a brand new 4-H year!!!!

If you would like to join 4-H as a new or returning member, enrollment will start up August 15th!  Everyone wishing to participate in any 4-H activities this fall and/or continue to receive the 4-H email blasts will need to enroll as soon as possible.  Active enrollment is required in order to turn in registration information for any 4-H activity (including livestock shows, District 4-H Activities, or other contests).

2020 Junior Leadership Retreat (Nov 13-17; Brownwood, TX)

 We are excited to host Junior Leadership Retreat (JLR) again this fall! We will be following the many of the same precautions we followed for summer camp this year, as well as leaning on adult volunteers and agents to help us pull this retreat off safely. Below are the protocols we will follow and the specific needs for adult assistance for the retreat. Attached are the flyer and image for JLR and a flyer for other retreats and events held at the center..

JLR Registration will open Thursday September 17.

4-H Camp Fall and Winter Retreat Safety Protocols:

  • Face mask will be worn when indoors and when we cannot social distance
  • We will encourage hand washing between sessions and before meals. Hand sanitizer will be provided
  • Dorms will be limited to half capacity- 8 people per dorm side
  • We will limit registration capacity as well
  • We will continue with a drive through drop-off and pick-up process

Adult Assistance with retreats:

  • Arrive early and assist campers unloading behind dorms- Summer staff did this during camps and we are unable to guarantee how many of them will be available.
  • Assist in meeting gender chaperone requirements in each dorm (we are always short on male chaperones)
  • Assist the youth rotating to sessions
  • Assist in keeping dormitories cleaned and sanitized
  • Must be screened, cleared, and complete required trainings on 4-H Online.
  • All chaperone duties will be reviewed the first evening of camp.

2020 Lone Star Dairy Extravaganza (Nov 13-15, 2020)

 Due to most major shows in Texas canceling their dairy cattle shows for 2020, a group has elected to have a state wide junior dairy show.  This will be a first of its kind for our Texas junior dairy exhibitors. 

A team of representatives from all areas of the state have gathered to offer our Junior Diary exhibitors the only all dairy focused show in the state!

Shooting Sports Update - Lee County 4-H Partnership Opportunities

 

Hello all!

We hope that you have been enjoying the cooler weather!  We are excited to talk about some updates and opportunities with the shooting sports program.  We are going to be partnering with the Lee County 4-H Shooting Sports program to offer some additional shooting sports discipline opportunities for our Bastrop County 4-H members (Archery, Rifle, etc.) The main requirements to participate in this partnership are that you MUST be actively enrolled as a Bastrop County 4-H member AND you MUST attend one of the Lee County 4-H Safety Meetingsif you are unable to make the safety meeting date below and want to participate, please let me or Ashley know immediately so we can touch base with the Lee County Extension Agents for a contingency plan.  

RSVP Instructions:

Hey all!

We have lots of opportunities coming up for Livestock Exhibitors - and we are excited!  Please check out the information below and let us know if you have any questions.  We will be working on visiting all of our new exhibitors' projects this year to help answer questions and to get to know your interests more.  If you are not a new exhibitor and would like to set up a project visit with us (or you would like to visit with us about planning for a livestock project), please email Mellanie (MLMickelson@ag.tamu.edu) and we will be happy to set up an appointment!

Quality Counts Reminders:

  • All livestock exhibitors in Bastrop County (both 4-H & FFA) will need to participate in the learning modules and pass the exam with at least an 80% to be able to exhibit their livestock projects.

    • the Bastrop Area Livestock Show Entry/Validation night for market steers, breeding heifers, and broilers is next Thursday, September 3rd, from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM at the Bastrop Area Livestock Show Barn (801 American Legion Drive; Bastrop, Texas 78602; Behind the American Legion).  We will also be taking plant show orders/entries. 

    • If your animal has already been state validated, you do not have to bring it with you, but you will still need to come and complete show entries.
    • If you would like to order your broilers online, you may do so here: Online Broiler Order Link.  If you would like to print your broiler order form and prepare payment to bring with you, you may download those forms here: Printable Broiler Order Form (Fillable PDF).  Remember for broiler orders, we require 2 checks/entries fees: 1 for your BALSFA entry fee (made payable to BALSFA) to enter the show and 1 for the broiler orders (made payable to Bastrop 4-H Animal Validation).

        • Membership deadline has been moved to October 1, 2020
        • All show Livestock Show and Youth Fair entries will be due by November 1, 2020
        • Updated rules for ownership and validation
    • The 2020 rules are currently posted; however, the updates to those rules are also noted on the website.
  • Smithville Livestock Show
    • The Smithville Show Board is working on reviewing the show rules
    • Be looking for some dates when the rules are released

Major Livestock Show Reminders:

  • The Spring Major Livestock Shows (Fort Worth, San Angelo, San Antonio, Houston, and Rodeo Austin) are planning on releasing their entry paperwork in mid-October (we are thinking around October 12th) - please be looking for updates on opportunities around that time if you would like to show
  • Major Show Entries for these shows will be due to the County Extension Office (CEO) by 12:00 Noon on Thursday, November 5, 2020

Major Livestock Show Validations:

  • All livestock projects that exhibitors would like to show in the major livestock shows (Fort Worth, San Angelo, San Antonio, Houston, Rodeo Austin, etc.) MUST be state validated for the current 4-H/school year - to receive the validation day details, you must purchase validation tags.
  • All Details posted on our Livestock Show & Validation Page: https://counties.agrilife.org/bastrop/livestock/
  • Physical Validation Dates (location TBA):
    • Major Heifer, Lamb, & Goat Validation: Tuesday, October 27, 2020 (starting at 5:00 PM – time slot required)
    • Major Swine Validation: Tuesday, November 17, 2020 (starting at 5:00 PM – time slot required)
    • If anyone has conflicts with the dates, they will need to let us know ahead of time and as soon as possible (no later than 3 weeks prior to the validation)
