2020-2021 Validation Tag Order Information & Pop-up Livestock Show Cautions

clover

Good afternoon, all!

While I know we are disappointed in the mandated closure of 2 of our big livestock showing opportunities this year, it is a prime opportunity to demonstrate to our youth how we positively address stressful and frustrating situations in life.  I know it's hard to think about right now, but it is time to start looking into purchasing projects for next year.  So, I wanted to pass on some information regarding upcoming validation tag orders and a tentative save the date for summer validations, as well as some reminders for consideration with all of the pop up livestock shows taking place.

I also wanted to let you know that we will pass on any updates as soon as we receive them.  I know several people already had questions about the Lonestar Cattlemen Jeep Tickets - we are reaching out to them to see what they would like us to do with those items.  If you would like, you may bring your tickets and money to the Extension Office at this time - please make sure that the envelopes are sealed and your name and contact information are written on the envelope.

Moving on to Livestock Projects and Validation Tags:

  • Livestock Project One Pager:

    • Click here to download a one-page quick guide for livestock projects.  This is helpful for those who are new to showing livestock and the validation timelines.
    • Reminder: there is no state validation for rabbits - if you would like to show rabbits, you will need to work on looking into the show rules and age requirements to work on purchasing rabbits and work on entries.  It is a good idea to start visiting with breeders now and as you learn more about the shows you would like to attend.
    • Reminder: Another validation tag order will be placed in the fall for lamb, goat, swine, and heifer projects attending the spring major shows.

  • Validation Tag Orders:

    • All tags for Steers, Summer Heifers, State Fair Swine, and State Fair Lambs/Goats are due to the County Extension Office (CEO) by Wednesday, April 15th at $20 each.
      • This will be the only validation for steers - if you would like to show a steer at ANY major show, you will need to purchase tags and validate the animal(s).
      • This will be the first of 2 heifer validations - you may validate your heifer now to exhibit her in the State Fair or Heart of Texas shows or wait until the fall.  Heifers that were previously validated do NOT need to be revalidated unless they changed breed or ownership.
      • If you are planning to exhibit a lamb, goat, or hog at the State Fair or Heart of Texas Shows, you will need to purchase tags and validate the animal(s).  These animals will need to be revalidated in the fall if you would like to show them in the spring major shows.
    • Late Tag orders will be accepted after April 15th until Wednesday, May 13th, at $30 each.
    • Fillable PDF Order Forms are linked below – families may physically bring the order forms & payment, mail them, or place them online through our Eventbrite websites (there is a small fee to use credit cards) by the dates listed.
    • To order tags online, or download additional forms, please visit our website at https://bastrop.agrilife.org/livestock/ and click on the species you would like to order (please see image below for reference).

  • Save the Date:

    • We are currently looking at Tuesday, June 23, 2020, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM for summer validations.
    • We will announce the official date as soon as we have a response from all of the Ag Teachers

  • Reminders and Considerations for attending pop-up or jackpot show opportunities:

    • Please use your best judgement and be extremely careful when choosing to attend these opportunities - we are being asked to limit in-person meeting and gatherings to help prevent potential viral exposure.  Our Extension Leadership is working on determining the official stance and advisement on these opportunities at this time.
    • Please make sure that you are using common sense and monitoring your health before, during, and after these events.  This includes making sure that you are taking self-care measures, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and washing your hands frequently.
    • Visit the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Services Coronavirus Information & Resources Page for current information regarding the virus
    • Please see the image below for reminders on which symptoms you should consider staying home if you are experiencing them:

    • stay home if...

Please let me know if you have any questions and have a great weekend!
