2020 GLOBE (Global Leadership Opportunities Beyond Education) registration is now open for Tier I (2 year experience)

We are excited to announce that GLOBE (Global Leadership Opportunities Beyond Education) registration is now open for Tier I of this two year experience.  4-H members currently in 7th – 11th grades will use the 4-H Connect system to register for GLOBE. When in Connect, select 2020 GLOBE to World Hunger Relief – Tier 1 to begin the registration process.  A registration fee of $175 will be charged until January 1 when the fee will increase to $200.  For 2020, we are partnering with World Hunger Relief in Waco for Tier I educational opportunities.  Tier II will be an unforgettable international service learning experience for 4-Hers in 2021 who meet the criteria.

Members who need any type of accommodation to participate in this program or who have questions about the physical access provided, should contact Darlene Locke at d-locke@tamu.edu prior to registering.

The GLOBE Experience:
Webinars: 4-H members are expected to participate in at least two of three scheduled online webinars. The webinars are designed to introduce youth to the concepts of poverty, ag sustainability and temporary aid.

Experiential Field Trip:  40 youth and Texas A&M AgriLife personnel serving as chaperones will meet at the World Hunger Relief Organization in Waco. Participants must choose either the June 15-17 OR June 17-19 Session (content is the same, two groups required due to facility limitations). The registration fee of $175 includes two nights lodging and meals. Participants will bring sleeping bags and toiletries as with any ‘camp’ experience.

GLOBE 4-H Polo: All participants will receive a Texas 4-H GLOBE commemorative polo shirt.
Expectations: Upon completion of the Tier I experience at World Hunger Relief Organization, participants are expected to complete a  service project related to poverty and/or hunger and make two presentations about their experience to civic groups.  Tasks will be reported through an online reporting system. Deadline to complete all assignments is October 31.

What’s next? A Tier II international service learning experience abroad will be offered in 2021; only those youth that have completed the Tier I experience are eligible to participate.

K Meuth, a recent participant shared the following after her experience.

GLOBE was an incredible experience, and it pushed me to understand people, community, and culture from a new perspective. I understood poverty in its depths, and was assigned to do a community service project that is becoming a catalyst for so much more.

Before GLOBE, much of my experience with poverty was the success stories; the tales of those special few who were able to rise above their circumstances and claw their way out of the grips of scarcity. Staying in the global village at Heifer Ranch, I saw for the first time all of the little things, the daily struggles, that make it almost impossible for people to be free of the manacles of not having enough. Staying afloat and not slipping deeper into poverty is, much of the time, the only struggle a person can take on.

The entire GLOBE experience taught me so much, and both trips gave me insight into different mentalities, bringing me lessons that I could take home. GLOBE also helped me realize how much I can do without waiting for anyone else to go first. It showed me that I can depend on myself to take the leap, ask the questions, and do something real for my community and the world.
